Chapter Seventeen

Banishment

It was the following day when the Children of Earth were invited into the presence of the First Father and Mother once more. Tanya noted that as they sat at the noon-meal, they had pears to eat instead of apples. Again the various members of the talking animal community were present.

“There was a question which was not answered when last we met.” began Ish. David now knew the Dark One had been advising the King and Queen. Again he breathed a silent prayer for guidance, and to help him keep his temper.

“Which question was that?” asked Tanya, allowing her brother time to prepare himself for the mental confrontation which would surely follow.

“Animal skins.” announced Issha.

“I thought we had answered the question regarding animal skins. You wanted to know where the animal skin clothing for our attire came from; we told you Es-soh-en provided all of our clothing. Where Es-soh-en obtained the clothing, we do not know. He has said that our swords were crafted in the Kingdom, but He gave no further information regarding the rest of our clothes, in particular the clothing made of animal skins.” Tanya continued.

“Then let us speak of the clothing you wear in your own world.” suggested Ish.

“What do you want to know about our world?” offered David.

“Do you wear the same type of clothing in your world?” Ish inquired.

“Similar, but different. In our world, clothing is a constantly changing thing. Over the centuries, it has gone through great changes. It differs from country to country. In our society, clothing style changes from year to year.” noted David.

“Does it also involve the skin of dead animals?” pressed Issha.

“Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Many years ago, the skin of dead animals was used for all our shoes, belts, gloves and bags. Again, for the same reason that Es-soh-en explained. As we learned more about other substances, we were able to make material that was as tough as the animal skin. It cost less, and so many people used these materials to make the shoes, belts, gloves and bags. Others continued to use the animal skin.”

“Cost? You have not explained that word before.” asked Issha.

“It is what we call ‘economy.’ Each country collects various things that they believe to have great value; this is called ‘wealth.‘ The country creates pieces of paper-wood fibers pressed together so they are thin and flexible, and small metal discs based upon how much wealth the country has. The paper and the discs are used by people in that country. When someone makes something, or does something for another, the person gives so many pieces of paper or discs to the one who did the work or made the object. Things that have greater value require more pieces of paper or discs. The number of pieces of paper or discs given to the other is called the ‘cost‘ – the value or the worth of the object. The exchange of the paper or discs for the object or the work is called a ‘purchase.
